Afghanistan 

The Taliban have launched ‘vice and virtue’ laws that further oppress women, banning them from speaking or showing their faces in public, among other restrictions. The UN has publicly condemned the new law.

Armenia 

Armenia proposes a renewed peace deal with Azerbaijan, signing 13 out of the 17 articles.

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan calls for a parliamentary snap election on the 1st of September.

Bangladesh 

Amid protests against the government, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigns and flees the country, leaving an interim government to rule the nation.

Indonesia 

Protests erupt across the nation amidst attempted amendments to the election law which would ‘strengthen the political influence’ of the outgoing president.

Mongolia 

Putin is set to visit Mongolia despite Mongolia's status as an ICC member state and the ICC arrest warrant for Putin. Human Rights Watch calls for Mongolia to ‘deny entry to Russian President Vladimir Putin or arrest him if he enters the country’.

State of Palestine 

In response to Gaza’s first polio case in 25 years, UN agencies have begun a polio vaccination campaign. As of 15 August 2024, the Palestinian death toll surpasses 40,000.
